At Mount Maunganui, the second Twenty20 international was scheduled to begin with a toss on Friday. However, rain forced the match between Bangladesh and New Zealand to be called off after just 11 overs.
By then, the match was fairly matched as New Zealand had reached 72 for 2 wickets in 11 overs. After a Tim Seifert-led first assault, Bangladesh rallied.
Seifert had a fast-paced innings, hitting six fours and one six in twenty-three balls to score forty-three runs. Craig McMillan, a pundit, summed up Seifert’s performance by saying, “He went after it like a battering ram,” highlighting his aggressive start that gave New Zealand some early momentum that was well-timed.
It was an important innings, though, since Shoriful Islam went out to clear out when Seifert was dismissed in the second over, and Daryl Mitchell’s comeback to the top of the New Zealand order was sluggish. A Muslim bouncer struck Seifert on the side of his helmet in the center at eight, but he carried on following a medical examination.
Mitchell amassed 18 runs off of 24 balls, and attempts were made to remove Mitchell and Glenn Phillips (9* in 14) by Bangladesh’s quick bowlers, particularly leg-spinner Shoriful Islam. With three overs for 3.33 runs, Shoriful restrained Mitchell and Phillips.
Pressure was increased by Bangladesh‘s superb fielding, particularly on the slick outfield. Seifert was out of the game in the eighth over thanks to a tough catch made by Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was busy diving close to the boundary.
When the rain changed from light to heavy, the game was canceled around 9:55 p.m. local time.
