On Sunday, the Maldivian government released a statement outlining its position regarding Minister Shiyuna’s comments made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

Observing a sharp rise in disparaging remarks directed at Indian tourists, the Maldivian government declared that it would not hesitate to prosecute anybody who make these kinds of “mocking remarks.

The Maldivian government is aware of disparaging remarks made on social media regarding celebrities and foreign leaders.

These are individual viewpoints and do not necessarily reflect those of the Maldivian government. Additionally, the statement stated that “the government’s appropriate authorities do not hesitate to take action against those making mocking remarks.”

On the social media platform X, Mariyam Shiyuna, the deputy minister for youth empowerment, made disparaging comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A post by Shiyuna that has since been removed featured pictures from Modi’s most recent trip to Lakshadweep.

The Indian Prime Minister was called “ridiculous” and a “skinny puppet of Israel” by the Deputy Minister.

The island nation’s political leaders came under fire after Prime Minister Modi’s visit, which was depicted by Indian media as an alternative to Modi’s Maldives tour.

In addition, Zahid Rameez, a senator representing the Progressive Party of the Maldives, made fun of Lakshadweep’s beaches and questioned if the Maldives’ services might be useful to central India.

On X, Rameez remarked, “I think this idea is excellent. But coming up against us is a sneaky challenge. How are they going to deliver our suggested service? How are they so spotless? The largest catastrophe will be a persistent stench in the rooms.”

Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, denounced the minister’s disparaging comments. President Mohamed Maumoon was encouraged by Nasheed to refrain from making such statements by the administration.

“The language used by a senior government leader, @shiuna_m, who is a crucial ally for the wellbeing and prosperity of the Maldives, is frightening,” he declared.

The government of @MMuizzu ought to disassociate itself from these statements and guarantee India that they do not represent official government policy. On X, Nasheed posted.

Indians reacted angrily, claiming on social media that over 8,000 hotel reservations and 2,500 airline tickets had been canceled following a Maldivian minister’s overt insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On January 2, Prime Minister Modi traveled to the Laccadive Islands and shared a number of photos, one of which showed him having a “enthusiastic experience” after going snorkeling.

India and the Maldives’ relations:

According to a Maldivian news website, the Maldives announced in December of the previous year that it would not be renewing the arrangement for the hydrographic survey carried out with India.

One of the Muzhu party’s major initiatives was the removal of Indian military from the Maldives. There are currently about 70 Indian soldiers in the Maldives, flying two HAL Dhruv helicopters and a Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft.
