The first one-day encounter between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe this week was prematurely ended by heavy rain. After four overs, with two wickets lost at 12 runs, Zimbabwe was in trouble when the rain came.

9:00 PM local time (13:30 GMT) was the call-off time for the game. Dilshan Madushanka, a quick left-arm pacer, made an early impression by trapping opener Tinash Kamunhukamwe for a duck in the first ball.

Madushanka, who was recently purchased by the Mumbai Indians for 4.60 crores at the IPL December 2024 auction, took his second wicket in the same over when he caught skipper Craig Ervine in the slips off Shanaka’s bowling.

Madushanka bowled the first two overs in order. Charith Asalanka, vice captain of Sri Lanka, was crucial, hitting 273 runs with nine boundaries at the cost of nine wickets.

Following the dismissals of Fernando and Samarawickrama, Zimbabwe’s bowlers, headed by Record Ngavara, captured two wickets for 39 runs following early victories with the new ball.

Sikandar Raza, a left-arm spinner, came back for the second spell in the dying overs but was forced to leave the field with an injury after hitting just four deliveries.

On Monday and Thursday, teams will play an additional one-day match. Three Twenty20 matches will then take place, all in Colombo.
